Dr. Iyanla Vanzant on Money Issues – Original Article Written by Lynn Richardson for Global Grind

Dr. Vanzant, you’ve been through a lot — being on Oprah, million dollar book deals, losing your money, etc. and you are STILL here! What do you say to the average person who doesn’t have enough money to make ends meet?

Iyanla: If money is the only problem, then you don’t have a problem. If you got a money problem, you better look to forgiveness. If you got a money problem, look to your character. If you got a money problem, look to your integrity. If you got a money problem, look to where you’re not being accountable, in integrity; be responsible for what you do with your mouth. If you got a money problem, I don’t care what it is, look to the principles that govern the universe.

Now it doesn’t mean that you will have wealth of money in your bank account, but it does mean that you will not starve.

I went to South Africa with 14 cents in my pocket. I ate on the airplane… I went all over South Africa with 14 cents in my pocket. I came back with a check, but I didn’t go there with any money! We have many, many, wants, but our needs are always provided.

Somebody said, a wealthy man is not one with much money, it’s one with few wants. A lot of the things that we struggle to get money for are not things that we need, but things that we want. Things that we want, in order to attract them to us, we need a vision. You need a vision, an intention, and be responsible with your mouth, and integrity with what you do, and have your character in alignment with what is good and what is honorable, what is kind, what is loving. Forgive somebody. Stop being pissed off at your baby’s momma, or your baby’s daddy. Do something good for somebody, instead worrying about what somebody ain’t doing for you. Open your mouth and say good morning, instead of “hey dog” … “yo nigga” … “that bitch” … don’t speak like that.

If money is the only problem, there is no problem. It’s pathology that the individual is responsible for cleaning up. Do the right thing even when nobody’s listening. What you think, what you say, what you feel, and what you do are all in alignment. And when you clean that stuff up, the money will flow. And if it doesn’t flow then divine angels cleverly disguised as human beings will show up to facilitate your vision.

Coach Lynn’s Money Message

If things are really tight, eliminate everything that you can do without. Trade your cable bill in for time at the library. Trade your coffee habit in for a can of Foldgers and add your own French Vanilla Cream. Trade those ridiculous bank/nsf fees in for a Rushcard. Trade your elementary school tuition bill in for public education and be present so the teachers will have no choice but to educate your children.

If you are in over your head, consider bankruptcy BEFORE you lose your valuable assets like your pension and savings. Those who file bankruptcy are better off than those who carry around bad debt, judgments and collections year after year. You can buy a home three years after a Chapter 7 is discharged and you can get a mortgage WHILE you are in a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy repayment as long as you have made your payments on time for a year and you have no new debt.

  90. The potential within all things is a mystery that fascinates me endlessly. A tiny seed already contains within it the entire blueprint of a towering tree, waiting for the right moment to emerge. Does the seed know what it will become? Do we? Or are we all simply waiting for the right conditions to awaken into what we have always been destined to be?

  91. Time is often called the soul of motion, the great measure of change, but what if it is merely an illusion? What if we are not moving forward but simply circling the same points, like the smoke from a burning fire, curling back onto itself, repeating patterns we fail to recognize? Maybe the past and future are just two sides of the same moment, and all we ever have is now.

  92. If everything in this universe has a cause, then surely the cause of my hunger must be the divine order of things aligning to guide me toward the ultimate pleasure of a well-timed meal. Could it be that desire itself is a cosmic signal, a way for nature to communicate with us, pushing us toward the fulfillment of our potential? Perhaps the true philosopher is not the one who ignores his desires, but the one who understands their deeper meaning.

  93. The essence of existence is like smoke, always shifting, always changing, yet somehow always present. It moves with the wind of thought, expanding and contracting, never quite settling but never truly disappearing. Perhaps to exist is simply to flow, to let oneself be carried by the great current of being without resistance.

  94. Even the gods, if they exist, must laugh from time to time. Perhaps what we call tragedy is merely comedy from a higher perspective, a joke we are too caught up in to understand. Maybe the wisest among us are not the ones who take life the most seriously, but those who can laugh at its absurdity and find joy even in the darkest moments.

  95. The cosmos is said to be an ordered place, ruled by laws and principles, yet within that order exists chaos, unpredictability, and the unexpected. Perhaps true balance is not about eliminating chaos but embracing it, learning to see the beauty in disorder, the harmony within the unpredictable. Maybe to truly understand the universe, we must stop trying to control it and simply become one with its rhythm.

  99. Man is said to seek happiness above all else, but what if true happiness comes only when we stop searching for it? It is like trying to catch the wind with our hands—the harder we try, the more it slips through our fingers. Perhaps happiness is not a destination but a state of allowing, of surrendering to the present and realizing that we already have everything we need.

  100. I regard something truly special in this internet site.

  101. Friendship, some say, is a single soul residing in two bodies, but why limit it to two? What if friendship is more like a great, endless web, where each connection strengthens the whole? Maybe we are not separate beings at all, but parts of one vast consciousness, reaching out through the illusion of individuality to recognize itself in another.

  103. Very interesting subject, thanks for putting up. “The maxim of the British people is ‘Business as Usual.'” by Sir Winston Leonard Spenser Churchill.
